Red fescue has three subspecies; chewing fescue (festuca rubra commutata), red fescue with slender creepers (festuca rubra trichofila) and creeping red fescue (festuca rubra rubra). Red fescue will perform well on all types of soil but on poor sandy soil it will dominate. Red fescue is also quite tolerant to shadow. Under dry conditions the crop will look pale but is recovers very quickly after irrigation.
The varieties of chewing fescue and red fescue with slender creepers are very suitable for ornamental lawns and golfgreens. Creeping red fescue is very suitable for road shoulders and extensively managed grass fields.
